Facebook Marketing For Dummies 6th Edition
As discussed earlier in this chapter, your Facebook efforts are indeed measurable. You need to have an idea of where you stand at the beginning of your efforts to compare it with where you stand at the end of a promotion, ad campaign, event, or other activity. By creating benchmarks, the key indicators that define your Page's activity level, you can gauge your progress. Without knowing how many fans your Page had before a promotion, how can you calculate the success of the campaign? Take note of the number of views each specific tab on your Page gets; you can find this information on the Reach tab within Insights. Do certain tabs, such as your Photos tab, get more views than others? Make it a point to update the content on the other tabs to see whether this change increases their views. If views increase, you know that your fans are looking for you to update all your tabs more fre- quently, not just your Timeline.

Wiley Linux For Dummies 6th Edition Mar 2005 ISBN 0764579371 pdf
The Linux command-line interface provides a quick and easy way of entering commands and executing actions. Even if you're mostly a "GUI person," after you get the hang of using the command line, you discover that it's faster to perform some tasks at the command line than with a mouse in the GUI envi- ronment. However, if you prefer to use a GUI interface as your working environment, you can easily open a terminal window, which is a command- prompt window, to perform your command-driven tasks without having to completely leave the point-and-click environment (see Chapter 14). There are some interesting things that you might find useful to know about using the command-line interface. One difference between the Linux com- mand line and other interface command lines, such as the Windows MS-DOS prompt, is that Linux commands are case sensitive. Typing LS is completely different from typing ls , and, in fact, gives you an error because there is an ls command but there is no LS command. The Linux command line also has an autocompletion feature. If you know the first few characters of a command or filename, type part of it and press Tab to complete the rest automatically. For example, if you're trying to use the less command to view the contents of the file /home/bob/grocery_list , you can type less /home/bob/gro and press Tab to try and complete the filename. However, if you also have the subdirectory (folder) /home/bob/group_projects , you hear a beep. You can press the Tab key again, like double-clicking a mouse, to see the output:

Google AdWords For Dummies, 2nd Edition
Timothy Seward, my neighbor in North Carolina, has taught me more about Analytics than I thought there was to know. If I'd been paying for his time, he'd be retired by now. The fabulous Joy Milkowski shared her methodologies with me and helped me rewrite the chapter about creating compelling ads. The friendship we developed during this project has been an added bonus. Don Crowther, one of the cleverest and under-the-radar marketers on this or any other planet, shared more cool ideas with me than I could ever have hoped. And Dan Hollings, the man behind the online success of "The Secret," reached out to me in an Amazon.com review of the fi rst edition of AdWords For Dummies and has been blowing my mind with his crazy-brilliant online strategies ever since. Bryan Todd and I have argued and philosophized about metrics more than either of us cares to admit. Kelly Muldoon shared her experience with geographic targeting and always has the right amount of sympathy and chocolate for any situation. Michael Katz, the world's expert on e-newsletters, was so helpful during this project that I almost forgive him for being funnier than I am. Joe Chapuis generously shared his knowledge about the cutting edge of online video, while Ari Galper enlightened me about the marketing potential of live chat and allowed me to reveal his strategies and show his screen shots. Thanks also to my many clients who shared case studies with me — sorry about all the ones I couldn't use.

Any program using this file must "know" how each field was assigned, because that information is not contained in the database itself.

927 WordPress For Dummies, 2nd Edition
✓ Business: This type of blogger uses the power of blogs to promote her company's business services and/or products on the Internet. Blogs are very effective tools for promotion and marketing, and these blogs usually offer helpful information to readers and consumers, such as ad tips and product reviews. Business blogs also let readers provide feed- back and ideas, which can help a company improve its services. Search engines (such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN) really like Web sites that are updated on a regular basis, and using a blog for your business lets you update your Web site regularly with content and information that your readers and consumers may find helpful. At the same time, you can increase your company's exposure in the search engines by giving the search engines a lot of content to sift through and include in the search results. A good example of this is a company called ServerBeach — it keeps a blog on the hosted WordPress.com service at http:// serverbeach.wordpress.com.

To try out Facebook friends lists, click the little drop-down arrow right next to the Post button below your status update before you post; from there you can customize the lists of people who see your post. To create new friends lists and add people to them, you'll need to click on Friends in the left column and then Manage Friend List at the top of the next page. Check out this link at Facebook's Help Center for more information about friends lists:

Linux All In One For Dummies 6th Edition pdf pdf
You may feel a tad worried about installing a new operating system on your PC because the process is a bit like brain surgery — or like grafting a new brain, because you can install Linux in addition to Microsoft Windows. When you install two operating systems, you can choose to start one or the other when you power up the PC. The biggest headache in adding Linux to a PC with Windows is creating a new disk partition, which means setting aside a part of the hard drive for Linux. The rest of the installation is routine — a matter of following the instructions. If you want to try any of the Live media versions, you don't have to do any disk partitioning; just boot your PC from the Live DVD/CD/flash drive. But first, take a deep breath and exhale slooowwwly. You have nothing to worry about.

Starting an Online Business For Dummies, 6th Edition
At first, business was slow. "I remember saying to my wife, 'You know what? We had ten page views yesterday.'" The Graphic Maps site (www.graphicmaps.com) was averag- ing about 30 page views per day when Moen decided to do something that many beginners may find counterproductive, even silly: He started giving away his work for free. He cre- ated some free art (called clip art) and made it available for people to copy. And he didn't stop there: He began giving away his knowledge of geography. He answered questions submitted to him by schoolchildren and teachers. Soon, his site was getting 1,000 visits a day. Today, he reports, "We are so busy, we liter- ally can't keep up with the demand for custom maps. Almost 95 percent of our business leads come from the Web, and that includes many international companies and Web sites. Web page traffic has grown to more than 3 million hits per month, and banner advertising now pays very well."

To some extent, Facebook requires a new mindset based on the concept of openness. Facebook marketers need to embrace openness, while understand- ing the inevitable challenges and pitfalls that go along with it. Unlike previous mass media (such as, print, radio, and television), Facebook is a two-way medium, lending itself to a new kind of relationship between consumer and marketer — a relationship based on trust, openness, and transparency. It's important to note that there is a major generational shift in the amount of information people disclose via online social networks. The younger genera- tion (teens and college students) has much less fear and trepidation of broad- casting their lives, warts and all, via Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, blogs, and other social media, whereas those who didn't grow up with the Internet are typically much more hesitant to release even the slightest bit of information. Since the lines are blurring between many people's professional and personal lives, you need to realize that business relationships may in fact crossover and become part of your Facebook personal network of friends. But that doesn't mean your entire life or business needs to be an open book. Basic common-sense rules that apply while on Facebook include:

➟ Accounts are important. Mac OS X will ask you to create your account, which identifies you when you're using your Mac. Mac OS X uses the name and pass- word you enter to create your account, which you use to log in if you set up a multiuser system for sev- eral people. When you're creating your account, don't forget your password! That's very important. And here's a big hint: Passwords are case-sensitive, so THIS is different from this or ThiS. Enter a password hint if you want, but don't make the hint easy to guess. For example, My first dog's name is probably preferable to Plays Seinfeld on TV. Never write down your pass- words, either; crib sheets work just as well for others as for you.

HTML 4 For Dummies, 5th Edition
I n this part of the book, we introduce and describe Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), a powerful markup lan- guage that is often used to supplement (X)HTML and to manage the way it looks in a Web browser. (X)HTML can reference CSS by including either an external style sheet or inline CSS markup within an (X)HTML document. Here, you start out by learning the many and various capa- bilities of CSS, about different kinds of style sheets, and about the rules for handling multiple style sheets when they're applied to a single Web page (that's where the Cascading in CSS comes from). Of course, you also learn how to build and use CSS for things like creating visual lay- outs, positioning individual items, and handling fonts. Because CSS also provides controls over color and modify- ing how text appears on the page, you learn how to deal with these capabilities as well.

PCs For Dummies Quick Reference, 3rd Edition
The system tray also displays other icons. Those icons represent various running tasks or programs, many of which monitor things that go on in the computer "in the background." For example, an antivirus program may have its icon appear on the system tray. Icons on the system tray may display messages from time to time that alert you to certain changing conditions in the computer. You can control the icons on the system tray by using the mouse. Clicking, double-clicking, or right-clicking the icons controls their behavior, making them pop up a menu, display a window, or do something else (though some icons don't do anything). Sometimes, merely pointing the mouse at an icon does the job. What the icon does, of course, depends on which program the icon represents. The system tray is also known as the notification area, though most manuals and documentation refer to it as the system tray.

Creating Web Pages For Dummies, 9th Edition
Photo sharing is one of the greatest uses of the Web. Flickr is the most popular photo-sharing Web site around, largely because it's so easy to use. Photo files can be very large. But more and more people have digital cameras and cellphones that take pictures. These pictures are already in digital form — and they can be automatically compressed, using the JPEG standard, from their original size of several megabytes to about 100 KB or so. (A 100KB photo is just a tenth of a megabyte in size, and doesn't take long to upload and download.) These photo files go onto Flickr very easily. The other technological advance is the increasing number of people who have broadband Web access. Broadband is a catchall name for all sorts of faster access, usually at least 1 megabyte per second. At this speed, you can get ten typical JPEG photos uploaded to your Web site — or downloaded to your screen — in a second. Suddenly, adding a reasonable number of photos to your site doesn't slow it to a crawl — if they're fairly strongly compressed with JPEG.

1009 Blogging For Dummies, 4th Edition
Forums, also called bulletin boards, offer one way to engage in online con- versation on the web, but they aren't as directed by regular posts as blogs. Everyone in the forum community is free to chime in with a topic or question. In fact, some bloggers have chosen to add forums to their blogs as a place for free-flowing conversation. I talk more about how this can work in Chapter 13. Visitors to a blog have the opportunity to leave a comment on each post. Sometimes, readers leave comments in reaction to what they read; other times, they might offer a suggestion or pose a question. Because any reader can leave a comment, readers may leave comments about other comments! Blog posts often include a link directly below each post, indicating how many comments readers have left. Clicking this link takes you to a page that dis- plays the post, any comments that readers have left about that post, and a form that you can use to leave your own comment.
